As you may know, after nearly 20 years of working as a yacht broker in a more traditional way I now spend most of my time producing videos that market yachts that are for sale and charter. 

2024 has started with an extremely intense filming schedule, and I have already visited Fort Lauderdale, the Bahamas, St Kitts, Saint Martin, and I'm writing you from Miami before catching a plane back to Monaco!

Travel is a big part of a yacht broker's life, and my schedule so far this year reminded me of that. It also reminded me of how unpredictable the yachting business is!!!

Bad weather, engine failure, unexpected charter bookings, not to mention the change of a yacht owner's plans...all of these things can scupper your travel plans and result in you losing both your time and your money. When all that is lost is a video shoot it is not so bad...ANNOYING...but not so bad. But when you stand to lose a million dollar commission from a sale you have been working on for months or even years...let me tell you from experience it can drive you crazy.

To be a successful yacht broker you need great resilience to be able to accept these unpredictable events with a positive attitude. It is important that you don't become discouraged, but rather keep working hard to save the deal - or if it simply cannot be saved to push ahead with other deals that you are working on. 

Yacht brokerage is the ultimate in high risk/high reward businesses. Million dollar commissions can be won...or lost depending on something as simple as the weather conditions on the day of a sea trial. All things considered though, if it was easy and uncomplicated EVERYBODY would be doing it!
