The Yacht Broker Blog

Lay down the yacht broker basics

Dec 22, 2023

Some readers of this blog already work for brokerage companies, but most do not and wonder how they can get into the yachting industry.

This week I want to give you some advice based on the reality of this business.

If you want to be successful, you really need to live in a place where there are yachts and yacht owners. If you live far from the ocean and seriously want to be a part of this amazing world, the first thing you need to do is find work in Fort Lauderdale, Palma, Antibes, or any one of hundreds of locations where yachts can be found. You may not immediately find work with a yacht brokerage company, but it is very likely that you will find work with a business that is associated with yachting.

This will give you an opportunity to build up your contacts and connections, to meet yacht Captains and yacht managers, and above all to network with folk who one day will become valuable sources of information and leads. As you continue to develop these connections there is no doubt that you will learn of buyers and sellers who need the services of a yacht broker. It may not happen immediately, but it will most certainly happen eventually if you are patient and tenacious, and keep your eyes and ears open.

For those of you reading this who already live in such a location, I highly recommend that you find work within the yachting industry as a first step in becoming a broker. Be strategic in your thinking, look for opportunities, learn the names and types of yachts that you are providing a service for, and start to build your reputation as soon as you can.

And of course, lay the basis for becoming a future yacht broker by enrolling in the Yacht Broker Master Class!
