Don't get stars in your eyes!

Recently a colleague came into my office full of enthusiasm because he had the opportunity to represent a yacht for sale. The yacht he said was a little run down, very little maintenance had been done over the years, and it was built poorly by a practically unknown shipyard with no real brand value. Added to that, the client was hoping to achieve a price that was beyond any reasonable expectation, the yacht was about to go into a period of repair in a shipyard so would not be available for visits, and the owner was not prepared to sign an exclusive central agency contract.

So with an over-priced yacht in poor condition and no contract to ensure some kind of revenue from a sale, why was my colleague so enthusiastic? Well, simply put, the owner of the yacht was a very famous and very wealthy businessman.

Why am I telling you this story?

Because this is one of the most common errors that I have seen made over the years by even very experienced brokers. When an actor, a sports personality, or a TV entrepreneur approaches you to either buy or sell a yacht it’s so easy to be overwhelmed with excitement at the thought of doing business with them. Our eyes can become so full of stars that we no longer see the objective of selling yachts. Which is to make money. To make a profit. I’ve seen brokers spend months or even years pursuing high profile clients just for the street cred of saying “he’s my client”, and lose out on hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars of commission payments from. lets say “normal folk” who have a well maintained yacht, built by a reputable brand, and priced sensibly.
